Pilates
Pilates is a form of exercise that re-educates your body to move correctly, targeting the deeper stabilising muscles to give an improved posture, a healthy back and a better shape. The exercises are slow and controlled, using correct breathing techniques and body alignment. The quality of movement is more important than the amount of repetitions.
Modern lifestyles are generally more sedentary and involve a lot of sitting. Our muscles are often idle for prolonged periods of time and they may become shortened and weaker. The outcome of this is their inability to support the core structures when heavy physical demands are required.
The primary aim of Pilates is to build an efficient central core of stability muscles that stabilise the trunk and the spine. This is achieved through both mental and physical training. The mind is trained to become more aware of body position whilst the deep postural and stability muscles are activated.
