Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together (GoSC). It is a natural medicine which aims to restore function in the body by treating the cause of pain and imbalance.

The body is miraculous in the way it can cope as we challenge it with the stresses and strains of everyday life but sometimes it needs a little help. By maintaining the body structurally and working to relax or straighten things out it can begin to look after itself and work in a more efficient way.

Osteopathy is suitable for people of all ages. Our approach is to assess each patient individually and choose the most suitable treatment for them. Treatment includes manipulation, articulation, stretching, massage and cranial to increase the mobility of joints and relieve muscle tension to help your body’s own healing mechanisms.

Osteopathy can help with:

  • back pain
  • spinal and joint problems
  • muscular tension
  • nerve related problems
  • persistent pain
  • postural strain
  • stress related tension
  • work related tension
  • occupational and repetitive strain injuries
  • Sports injuries

What to expect on your first visit

Firstly we will discuss the symptoms you are experiencing and you will be asked about your medical history, general health and lifestyle and information relating to the source of your pain or discomfort. It would be helpful if you could bring with you the results of any relevant tests or scans you may have had and a list of any medication you are currently taking.

We will then examine you which will include a visual examination and you will be asked to do some active movements to see where the problem may lie. Additional clinical tests may be carried out such as reflexes or blood tests to assist with the diagnosis. You may be required to undress down to your underwear depending on area to be treated. You may wish to bring shorts or a vest type top.

A treatment plan tailored specifically for you will be put together and discussed with you. How many treatments required will depend on the problem and how long you have been experiencing it for. This will be reviewed and monitored at each treatment.

Treatment may include:

  • Soft tissue massage
  • Joint articulation
  • Stretching
  • Manipulation of joints if required
